Growth hormone promotes the growth of children and helps maintain tissues and organs throughout life. It is produced by the pea-sized pituitary gland - located at the base of the brain. However, starting from middle age, the pituitary gland slowly reduces the amount of growth hormone produced.

This natural slowdown has sparked interest in using synthetic human growth hormone (HGH) to prevent some of the changes associated with aging, such as muscle and bone mass reduction.

If you are skeptical, good. There is little evidence that human growth hormone can otherwise help healthy adults restore youth and vitality. In fact, experts recommend not using growth hormone to treat aging or age-related conditions.

Do adults need human growth hormone?
Yes. For adults with a true deficiency of growth hormone, rather than the expected decrease in growth hormone levels due to aging, doctors may prescribe a synthetic human growth hormone.

Growth hormone deficiency can be caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland (pituitary adenoma). It can also be caused by surgery or radiotherapy.

For adults with growth hormone deficiency, human growth hormone injections can:

Increase physical activity
Increase bone density
Increase muscle mass
Reduce body fat
Human growth hormone is also approved for the treatment of adults with muscle wasting caused by AIDS or HIV.

What can human growth hormone do for healthy adults?
Studies of healthy adults taking human growth hormone are limited. Although it seems that human growth hormone can increase muscle mass and reduce the amount of fat in the body of healthy older people, an increase in muscle does not lead to an increase in strength. It is not clear whether human growth hormone can provide other benefits to healthy adults.

What are the risks of taking human growth hormone if you don't need it?
Human growth hormone can cause a number of side effects for healthy adults, including:

Carpal tunnel syndrome
Increased insulin resistance
Swelling in the arms and legs (edema)
Pain in the joints and muscles
For men, an increase in breast tissue (gynecomastia)
Human growth hormone can also contribute to the development of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and possibly an increase in the risk of certain types of cancer.

Some studies suggest that side effects of human growth hormone treatment may be more likely in older people than in younger people. Since the studies of healthy adults taking human growth hormone were short-term, it is unclear whether the side effects could eventually dissipate or increase.

Does human growth hormone come in pill form?
At the doctor's prescription, human growth hormone is injected as an injection under the skin. No pill form available with HGH prescription. Some websites sell pills in the form of human growth hormone, claiming that it gives results similar to the injection form of the drug.

However, there is no evidence that these statements are true. These nutritional supplements are sometimes called human hormonal drugs. There is also no evidence that homeopathic medicines claim to contain human growth hormone.

What is the result?
If you have specific concerns about aging, ask your doctor about proven ways to improve your health. Remember that choosing a healthy lifestyle — for example, eating healthy and incorporating physical activity into your daily routine — can help you feel better as you grow older.
